Day five was the most demanding stretch of the Great Race so far, taking teams from Amarillo, Texas, to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The route covered around three hundred miles while climbing in elevation over the Canadian Escarpment, with temperatures staying in the 90s throughout the drive west. This southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains challenged some of the cars, but not the supercharged V8 in the Revology Boss 429.
The lunch stop was in Tucumcari, New Mexico, at the New Mexico Route 66 Museum. Also in the area was an awesome collection of Kaiser and Frazer automobiles, gathered for their 68th annual national convention. After lunch, racers continued west through Las Vegas, New Mexico, before heading on to the evening destination of Albuquerque.
When the teams arrived in Albuquerque, they were greeted by flames from hot air balloons placed on either side of the welcome gate. The final stop was Balloon Fiesta Park, located on the north side of town near the Rio Grande. The Revology Boss 429 soaked up the miles without issue, handling the heat and elevation while the air conditioning helped keep the crew comfortable.
